The Château de Lourmarin (tel. 04-90-68-15-23; www.chateau-de-lourmarin.com) was the first Renaissance chateau to be built in Provence, and it's a magnificent sight that dominates the village. Originally a 12th-century fortress, it was extended into the Château Vieux (Old Chateau) in the 15th century. The Renaissance wing (Château Neuf), added in the 16th century, contains some of the most impressive rooms, with wonderfully elaborate fireplaces and a grand stone staircase. This is where you can see the living areas, including dining rooms, bedrooms, and the music room, which is reserved for the use of visiting music students. The surrounding landscaped gardens and olive groves add to the beauty of the place. Daily hours are 10am to 6pm in July and August; 10:30am to noon and 2:30pm to 5:30pm May, June, and September; 10:30am to 11:30am and 2:30pm to 4:30pm March, April, and October; and 10:30am to 11:30am and 2:30 to 4pm February, November, and December. In January, the chateau is open Saturday and Sunday 2:30pm to 4pm. Admission is 6€ adults, 3.50€ students, 2.50€ children 10 and over, and free for those 9 and under.
