Like many other Austrian villages, Zell has a Pfarrkirche (Parish Church), this one dating from 1782. A huge dome tops its octagonal design.
Once this village was known only as a summer holiday site, but more recently it has also become a winter sports resort. In 1978, the Kreuzjoch area was opened to skiers, and Zell am Ziller took its place on the tourist ski maps of Europe. In season, a free ski bus stops at the major hotels to transport guests to the slopes.
You can travel by gondola to a restaurant with a view of the Gründalm (1,022m/3,353 ft.) and then continue by chairlift to Rosenalm (1,761m/5,778 ft.), where another restaurant opens onto a panoramic view. From Rosenalm, a surface lift can take you to a lofty citadel 2,266m (7,434 ft.) above sea level.
Another ski area, the Geriosstein, more than 5km (3 miles) from Zell am Ziller, also has bus service, but not as frequently. From the bottom station, a cableway will lift you to 1,647m (5,404 ft.), where you can take a chairlift up to 1,836m (6,024 ft.).
