Unique Lodging in Saugerties
Saugerties, fast becoming one of the hippest little spots between the Upper Hudson Valley and the Catskill Mountains, is still being discovered. Two "inns" offer unique and "in the know" small-scale accommodations. The Inn at Café Tamayo, 89 Partition St., Saugerties, NY 12477 (tel. 845/246-9371; www.cafetamayo.com; four units; $110-$125 double, $160-$175 suite; rates include full breakfast), a great value and one of the best restaurants in the region, is housed in an 1864 building on the main drag; upstairs are two simple but well-appointed, good-value rooms and one suite with queen-size brass beds, comfortable reading chairs, and TVs. One of the regular rooms has a claw-foot tub, while the suite has two separate bedrooms and a sitting room. What could be better than having a terrific dinner and then stumbling upstairs to bed? Another good restaurant with attractive rooms to rent in Saugerties is Miss Lucy's Kitchen, 90 Partition St., Saugerties, NY 12477 (tel. 845/246-9240; www.misslucyskitchen.com/guesthouse.html), which has two attractive and nicely equipped apartments (one- and two-bedroom) with Wi-Fi ($150-$175 double); pets are welcome.
Even more unexpected and special is Saugerties Lighthouse, off 9W and Mynderse Street, Saugerties, NY 12477 (tel. 845/247-0656; www.saugertieslighthouse.com; two units; $200 double; rate includes breakfast). Not just a poetic name for an inn, it's an actual B&B within an 1869 lighthouse at water's edge. It may not be the most conveniently located B&B you'll ever stay at -- access is by a half-mile-long trail through wood- and wetlands -- but it surely will be one of the most interesting: How often do you get to sleep in the upstairs of a historic lighthouse overlooking the Hudson River? Inside the lighthouse are a small museum, keeper's quarters, two bedrooms, a kitchen, and a living room. Rooms are nicely furnished. The smaller one has windows facing both south down the Hudson and west up the Esopus Creek toward town, while the larger room has two windows looking out on the river. Linens, towels, and soap are provided, but it's suggested that you take only a few belongings in a backpack. A single downstairs bathroom, with a sink, shower with hot water, and composting toilet, is shared by everyone staying in the lighthouse. Area restaurants will deliver to the lighthouse; guests can also make use of the kitchen, refrigerator, and gas grill. Pets are allowed if guests rent both rooms.
