In 2023, the Tampa Museum of Art added seven new gallery spaces, and an education center to its already comely $43.6 million waterfront building. A near-future expansion will double the gallery space again, adding a dramatic, mostly glass, rectangular building to the current one. All of this will house what has long been one of the region’s most impressive collections of classical antiquities, bronze sculptures, modern decorative arts, and sculpture by neoclassicist Hiram Powers and cubist Jacques Lipchitz. The museum’s other treasures include prints by James Rosenquist, Robert Rauschenberg, and Vik Muniz, and photographs by Cindy Sherman, Sandy Skoglund, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Garry Winogrand, and Andy Warhol. Temporary exhibits are sometimes blockbusters, featuring big names in contemporary art. Tip: A 14,000 square foot site LED installation on the building’s facade is an iconic fixture on the city’s skyline. It’s best viewed from Curtis Hixon Park.
