Ask a long-time San Antonian about the Liberty Bar and you’re likely to get an earful. Some say, “It was better before it moved from its old location”—in a ramshackle 1890 brothel/saloon with a decided lean on Josephine Street. Mind you, that was in 2010, but this local institution had been around for 25 years before that, and old loyalties die hard. The former convent where it now resides doesn’t have as much character during the day—both the upstairs and downstairs dining room are open and sunny—but at night live music brings back the soul. More important: The born-again hippie fare remains largely the same, served in generous portions at reasonable prices. You’ll find everything from comfort food (pot roast sandwich) to regional Mexican cuisine (the chile relleno en nogada). Lovers of exotic meats like venison and wild boar sausage mingle happily with vegetarians, who all find plenty to like on the menu.
