Praised far and wide as an example of infill done right, this eco-friendly development just north of downtown has been described as San Antonio’s leading urbanist destination. I can’t emphasize enough how this 22-acre multi-use complex—incorporating apartment buildings, the city’s poshest hotel, top restaurants, and elegant boutiques—has changed the face of San Antonio since around 2010, and it just keeps getting better. Different aspects of the Pearl are described in other chapters—its hotels, restaurants, and shops–but the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Pearl’s public spaces include an amphitheater where you can take outdoor yoga classes; a pocket park where First Thursdays feature live music and crafts vendors; and an array of free seasonal events.
