Classy and elegant, the iconic Borg was Iceland’s first luxury hotel when it opened in 1930. The work of architect Guðjón Samúelsson, who also designed the even more iconic Hallgrímskirkja church, the hotel’s castlelike features and prominent location overlooking Austurvöllur Square make it one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks. Major renovations in 2007 swapped out the dated interiors for a chic Art Deco look with modern Scandinavian amenities like Bang & Olufsen flatscreens, plus period black and white bathrooms equipped with Philippe Stark fittings and heated marble floors. The two-level Tower Suite, with 360-degree views of the city center, might just be the most luxurious room in the city and often hosts visiting celebrities. Sadly, they also swapped out their New Nordic restaurant for a branch of Jamie’s Italian.
