The Excellence is a nicely isolated property hemmed by palm trees, a series of small, interconnected three-story hotel blocks fronted by lawns and the small, shared pools of the swim-out suites.

The sinuous main pool wanders between the palapa-lined beach and the classier ocean-view suites. (No matter what class you go for, the best rooms are on teh third floor with their cathedral ceilings.)

The resort is adults-only and all-inclusive—with no reservations required at any of the restaurants (unlike at some more mid-scale all-inclusives), plus a few fun extras thrown in, like a half-hour horseback ride.

The “Excellence Club” (which costs about $69–$90 more per night) upgrades your room options, liquor selection, and myriad other minor amenities, plus you get dedicated check-in, a private section of the beach, and one spa treatment per person.
