The Camelback Inn, which for some 80 years has represented the epitome of resort luxury in the Valley, runs from Lincoln Avenue in Paradise Valley a full half-mile up to the base of Mummy Mountain; its views of Mummy and Camelback mountains are spectacular. There’s lots of southwestern character here, in what is really something like an apartment village neighborhood; you drive to your room and walk around on streets outside of the main building and gardens. It’s not monumentally constructed, like the Phoenician; the pools and restaurants are on a modest scale. It’s designed for the quiet and serene traveler looking for good basic luxury. Guest rooms are decorated with southwestern furnishings and art, and all have balconies or patios. You golf at the resort’s links a few miles away and get back and forth via shuttle. To my taste, the JW Marriott branding seems a little overdone at a historic hotel with these kinds of rates; you stay on Marriott Drive, drink out of Marriott cups, etc.
