Capital of the old province of Périgord, Périgueux stands on the Isle River. In addition to its food products (foie gras and truffles reign supreme here), the town is known for its medieval and Renaissance architecture and its Gallo-Roman ruins. The city is divided into three sections: Le Puy St-Front (the medieval town), on the slope of the hill; the Cité (the old Roman town); and, to the west, the modern town.
Though Périgueux (pop. 30,000) is very pretty, it is basically a sleepy provincial town. Its attractions probably won’t hold your interest for more than a day, but you’ll likely pass through on your way to the Dordogne Valley and the cave paintings at Les Eyzies.
