The convent includes a church that owns three of the most important works by the locally prominent Bréa brothers, who painted in the late 15th century. In a restored part of the convent where some Franciscan friars still live, 17th-century frescoes decorate the Musée Franciscain. Some 350 documents and works of art from the 15th to the 18th centuries are on display. The magnificent gardens are a photographer’s dream, and there’s rarely a tourist in sight. Panoramic views pan over Nice and the Baie des Anges. Artists Matisse and Dufy are buried in the cemetery nearby, and their graves are modern day pilgrimage spots; Matisse’s in particular is scattered with flowers and letters from aspiring artists.
