An all-couture department store, Dover specializes in clothing ($6,000 dresses, $500 T-shirts, $1,200 denim jackets) from such NY-based and international labels as Comme des Garcons, Smith and Smith, Rick Owens, and Alexander Wang. All of the goods are displayed as if this were an art installation, and the customers wander around uttering such only-in-Manhattan inanities as “When I bought my first pair of $400 shoes, people thought I was nuts. Now you can’t GET a pair of shoes for less than $400!”—which makes the store interesting to visit from an anthropological perspective (even if you can’t afford a thing here).
