Until nonprofit cultural center MATE opened in July 2012, there were relatively few places to see the work of world-renowned fashion photographer Mario Testino, a Lima native known for his images of the British Royal family and nearly every major fashion darling and Hollywood celebrity. Set in a restored 1898 republican-era mansion decorated with ornate tiles and century-old ironwork, this beautiful space is a major contribution to the city’s quickly expanding arts scene. On display are rotating exhibitions of Testino’s work, as well as paintings and photography from other Peruvian and international artists. There’s also an excellent attached cafe with locally sourced coffees and a gift shop. Plan for 1–2 hr. here.
