Oázis Reform Restaurant, at Rákóczi tér 3 (tel. 83/331-1023), is a self-service salad bar featuring adequate (if uninspired) vegetarian fare. There are cold and hot options and you can combine any salads you want. Go at lunchtime, when the food is freshest. Oázis is open Monday through Friday, 10am to 4pm. All food items cost 2,000 Ft per kilogram.
The Southern Shore
Try the Sándor Restaurant (tel. 84/312-829; www.sandorrestaurant.hu), on Erkel F. u. 30, popular with locals for large portions of contemporary Hungarian food. If you're looking for more traditional Hungarian fare with live Gypsy music, try the Csárdás Restaurant, at Fo u. 105 (tel. 84/310-642). The menu contains Hungarian fish and meat dishes, but they also have international and vegetarian options as well.
