Built around an artificial lake, the 92-hectare (227-acre) park is popular with joggers and families. Inside the Lake Gardens, a number of attractions are within walking distance of each other -- bring a parasol and insect repellent to protect yourself from the elements.

The Kuala Lumpur Bird Park (Jalan Perdana; tel. 03/2272-1010; www.klbirdpark.com; RM45 adults, RM35 children; daily 9am-7pm) is nestled in nicely landscaped gardens, with over 3,000 birds within a huge walk-in aviary where they stage daily feedings and bird shows. Stop in for refreshments at the Hornbill Café (tel. 03/2693-8086; main dishes RM16-RM42; open daily from 9am-8pm), next to the Bird Park's main entrance, which serves sandwiches, soups, and pasta, as well as a kids' menu.

Across the street from the Bird Park, the Kuala Lumpur Orchid Garden (Jalan Perdana; tel. 03/2693-5399; weekend and public holiday admission RM1 adults, free for children; free weekday admission for all; daily 9am-6pm) has a collection of over 800 orchid species from Malaysia and thousands of international varieties.

The Kuala Lumpur Butterfly Park (Jalan Cenderasari; tel. 03/2693-4799; RM18 adults, RM8 children; daily 9am-6pm) has over 6,000 butterflies belonging to 120 species that make their home in this park, which has been landscaped with more than 15,000 plants to simulate the butterflies' natural rainforest environment. There is also a large insect museum. Pay an extra RM1 to bring in a camera and RM4 for a video camera.
