Getting There -- Hallstatt is serviced by the same rail lines that go to Bad Ischl, which lies two stops to the north. Hallstatt is 43km (27 miles) north of the rail junction at Stainach-Irdning and 64km (40 miles) south of the rail junction at Attnang-Puchheim. Around eight buses per day depart from the railway station at Bad Ischl, through Bad Goisern, and continue on to Hallstatt (trip time: about 35 min.).
If you're driving, go to Bad Ischl, continue south along Route 145 until you reach Route 166, and then head south via Steeg to Hallstatt.
Visitor Information -- The tourist office is in the Kultur- und Kongresshaus, Seestrasse 169 (tel. 06134/8208; www.hallstaat.net). It's open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm, Saturday 10am to 5pm.
