The Dordogne River loops through some of France’s most beautiful scenery. Limestone cliffs alternate with lush green landscapes; ancient villages and castles are either perched high above or literally carved into the cliffs below. You can see most of it by car, but you’ll appreciate it even more if you get out and walk or climb around, or better yet, rent a canoe and get out into the river itself.

Getting There: It is difficult to access this area without your own vehicle, be it a car or a bicycle. The D53 follows the river on the south bank; the D703 partially follows it on the north.
