Although this stunner, designed by famed architect David Rockwell, sits on 499 acres of beachfront, it has only 60 rooms, meaning it doesn't give off big resort vibes. That said, it certainly has all the amenities of a mega resort, including access to two world class golf courses (one created by Tom Fazio, the other by Greg Norman); 5 Har-Tru tennis courts; three pools including a lazy river; a Gulf-front beach club (with pool deck, children’s pool, and beach services) and a lakefront boathouse (with canoes, kayaks, and fishing); and Camp WaterColor, with supervised kids’ activities. In 2024, the resort debuted newly renovated rooms that embody relaxation, with honey colored wood floors and furnishings, lots of linen, and, as before, massive windows. A ground-floor library with club chairs and a cocktail lounge opening onto the pool deck drive home that feeling even more. Guest rooms feature a walk-in shower with views to the beach, and Adirondack chairs on the balcony. Six ground-floor bungalows have outdoor showers enclosed by striped tents, a la French Riviera.
In addition to the rooms at the Inn, WaterColor has a selection of rental homes, ranging from one to five bedrooms. Rental guests can use all of the resort’s facilities, and kayaks and canoes are complimentary.
WaterColor’s sister community WaterSound Beach, managed by 360 Blue rental agency, (tel. 866/906-3581), is a 256-acre gated residential community 4 miles west near Camp Creek Course at WaterSound Club on 30A near Deer Lake State Park. It features a private beach club, white-sand beaches, and a seasonal restaurant. Rates for one- to five-bedroom private vacation rentals range from $195 to $1,550.
