In terms of sheer acreage, Bretton Woods/Mount Washington is New England's biggest ski resort; it's also possibly the most family-friendly. And it's at the foot of Mount Washington. What else could you ask for? The resort continues to do an award-winning job taking care of kids -- there are tons of programs for the little ones here, and SKI magazine annually ranks it among the nation's best family ski areas. The low-key attitude is a big part of that. Accommodations are available both on the mountain and nearby, notably at the grand, red-roofed Mount Washington Resort, though nightlife here mostly consists of a hot tub in your room or catching the late news on TV. Trails feature plenty of glades and wide cruising runs, perfect for beginners and families, as well as a few more challenging options for advanced skiers -- they're not up to the most radical slopes in Vermont and Maine, though. There's also night skiing; four freestyle (snowboard) terrain parks; and -- for those so inclined -- an excellent cross-country ski center nearby. A great New Hampshire experience.
