Even if it were empty, this museum would be worth a visit for the stunning historic building alone. Housed in a palace that was home to the city's bishops in Renaissance times, the upper floors contain an award winning modern extension completed in 2012 and including a cool café offering a panoramic view over the city. In the basement are the ruins of Coimbra's ancient Roman forum where visitors can take a subterranean stroll through 1st-century warehouses and market stores. Comprised within is one of Portugal's best art collections. The focus is on medieval painting and sculptures with masterpieces such as the "Passion of Christ" by Flemish artist Quentin Matsys, a golden chalice dating from the 12th-century and the haunting "Last Supper," a monumental series of saintly sculptures shaped by Philippe Hodart in the 1530s. The 2012 renovation has created magnificently airy spaces to display such works at their best.
