While better than most in Thailand in terms of animal welfare, the Chiang Mai zoo can feel a bit worn and sad. Locals love the pandas and they’re the stars of the extensive zoo. There’s an extra admission fee to see the pandas (100B adults, 50B children), as there is for other special attractions—the snow dome (adults 150B, children 100B) with real snow, and a murky aquarium (adults 450B, children 330B) that isn’t worth the extra fee. The site is too large to see everything by walking so take the shuttles (the monorail no longer runs). It makes for a good day out with kids who may be wilting from temple overdose (not to be underestimated).
