Out of fear of vandalism, the local tourist authorities have fenced in the megaliths and now allow visitors to wander freely among the menhirs only between October and March, when the park is open daily from 10am to 5pm, and when entrance is free. From April to September, the park can be visited only as part of a rigidly controlled 1-hour guided tour, priced at 11€ per person (6€ for students or anyone between 18 and 24; under 18 are free). Tours are usually in French but, depending on the perceived need, may include some additional commentary in English. The only way to be sure is to call the visitor center, La Maison des Mégalithes, at tel. 02-97-52-29 81, for a rundown on the tours arranged for the day of your intended visit. At Carnac Ville, Musée de Préhistoire, 10 pl. de la Chapelle (www.museedecarnac.com; tel. 02-97-52-22-04), displays collections from 450,000 B.C. to the 8th century. Admission is 7€ for adults, 3€ for ages 6 to 18, and free for children 5 and under. Hours are as follows: July and August Wednesday to Monday 10am to 6:30pm; April to June and September 10am to 12:30pm and 2 to 6pm, October 10am to 12:30pm and 2 to 5:30pm, and November to March 2 to 5:30pm.
