Canandaigua, which lies at the northern end of the lake of the same name, is the kind of laid-back small town that epitomizes the Finger Lakes region. Canandaigua Lake, the birthplace of the Seneca Nation that ruled this area in pre-Colonial days, is the area's principal attraction, but there are a number of unique sights and experiences in this part of what is rather redundantly called Lake Country. (Ontario County is home to 5 of the 11 Finger Lakes.) With the addition of the splendid New York Wine & Culinary Center, Canandaigua is looking to become an important gateway to the Finger Lakes.
