This mid-19th-century hotel got its most important facelift in 1903 to 1904 under the direction of Modernista architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner. He worked with two of the top artisans of the era to execute the design: sculptor Eusebi Arnau, who created a striking alabaster chimney in one of the dining rooms, and painter Ramon Casas, who did decorative painting and sgraffito work. Domènech i Montaner completed the look with wooden wainscoting and decorative blue and white tiles. The hotel restored some of the Modernista features when it renovated in 2010, and now offers architectural tours.
