The last thing you would expect to find in the toney Domain shopping complex is a bit of retro Americana. A re-creation of a motor court from 1950s Texas, replete with fire pits, grassy areas, and rocking chairs on breezeway patios, this boutique hotel might come off as corny if it were less skillfully done; instead, it’s charming and fun. The rooms have braided rugs, cowhide director’s chairs, and full-size SMEG refrigerators loaded with more adult beverages than most people could consume in a week, not to mention—shhh—such fancy-pants amenities as gourmet coffee, Egyptian cotton bedding, and boutique bath products from California. The Water Trough restaurant and bar—in a faux barn, naturally—features creative Texas fare like brisket tacos and cocktails served in a Mason jar. There’s plenty to do on the property—lawn games, Ping-Pong, swimming in an outdoor pool, bikes rentals, and live music from Wednesday to Saturday. And if you get bored with living in the past, there’s always the mall outside the door.
