Getting There
The Jung-ang rail line that connects Seoul to Busan runs through Andong. There is only one train daily from Seoul Station to Andong. The ride takes about 4 hours and costs about W22,000. The Cheongnyangni Station has more trains (seven or eight daily), with trains running daily from 9am to 9pm, but the trip lasts about 5 hours. There are also trains from Busan several times a day.
You can also take an express bus from the DongSeoul Bus Terminal, which will take about 4 hours. Buses run daily from 6:20am to 6:30pm about every half-hour. Daily buses also run frequently from Daegu (about every 7-20 min.). You can also take a bus from Busan, Cheongsong, Daejeon, and Pohang. The Andong Intercity Bus Terminal, 247-32 Unheung-dong, Andong (tel. 054/857-8296), has both express and regular buses.
The bus terminals and train stations are on the same street within walking distance of each other in downtown Andong.
If you're driving from Daegu, take highway 14 north to the Seo-Andong (West Andong) exit. Then, take highway 34 into the city.
Getting Around
There are local buses available that can take you to most places in town. For sites farther out, they run infrequently and the times are erratic.
If you have limited time, you can hire a taxi for a day. Taxis are always waiting outside the bus and train terminals. Negotiate with your driver, but rates are usually around W120,000 per day. The base fare starts at W1,500.
Andong is not an easy place to explore on foot. Although some sites of interest are clustered together (the Hahoe Village and the Folk Museum are within walking distance), many other attractions are difficult to reach even by bus.
Andong does offer a city tour bus (tel. 054/855-7179; http://andongtour.kr), which you have to reserve at least a day beforehand. There are two courses that start from the bus terminal, each costing W18,000 per person. The first one, which includes the Hahoe Maeul, runs Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday. The other course runs on Tuesday and Friday and includes the Dosan Seowon. Both tours run 10:30am to 6pm.
Visitor Information
The Gyeongsangbuk Province Tourist Information Office (tel. 054/852-6800; Nov-Feb daily 9am-5pm; Mar-Oct daily 9am-6pm) is right in front of the Andong Train Station (turn left when you exit). They have friendly English-speaking staff and great maps of Andong as well as the rest of the province. There is also a small information booth in front of the Hahoe Village, which has the same operating hours. The city's website is www.andong.go.kr.
Fast Facts
The central city post office is located just up the street from the train and bus stations. You will find banks and other businesses in the same area. The larger, central post office is on the west side of town on the same street as the police station. You can access the Internet from a handful of PC bahngs in town, or use the free computers at the tourist information office.
