A rather charming hodgepodge of conjoined buildings with exposed brick and stone and extensive tilework, Les Monges has served as a lodging since 1989. The location near the city government offices places you smack in the middle of town, and the decor of the rooms, while modest, is hardly as monkish as the name would suggest. The single suite, in fact, is decorated with Japanese-style furnishings, including a bed so low that you almost have to kneel first to lie down. There’s a whimsical charm about it all, and the family that operates the “palace” has a real sense of hospitality. They are genuinely excited to share their beloved Alicante with guests. The shared rooftop patio has charming views of the roofs and chimneys of old Alicante.
