100 Mile House: 174km (108 miles) N of Lillooet; 320km (199 miles) S of Prince George
Named for the roadhouse inn that marked the 100th mile north of Lillooet in the days of the Cariboo gold rush, 100 Mile House (pop. 1,978) is an attractive ranching community at the heart of a vast recreational paradise. There are thousands of lakes in the valleys that ring the town, making canoeing, fishing, and boating popular activities. In winter, the gently rolling landscape, combined with heavy snowfalls, make 100 Mile House a major cross-country ski destination.
Thirteen kilometers (8 miles) north is 108 Mile House, another frontier-era community now famed for its golf course and 108 Mile House Heritage Site (tel. 250/791-5288). This collection of ranch buildings includes an enormous log barn built to stable 200 Clydesdales, the horsepower that drove the stagecoaches.
